After a few years off, I am back to the blog. I am adding a few other subjects, in the manner of a collectors guide, but will still primarily review Transformers toys as before. So, on to Evolution Optimus Prime.
This is a leader class toy. It is nice and big, and looks a lot like a Masterpiece Optimus Prime. In the box is an instruction sheet, stat card, Prime trailer, prime cab, two piece prime gun and two piece Matrix of Leadership.
He looks great from the front. But as we turn him around things go downhill fast.
From the back we have trailer parts and Orin Pax’s legs. Kind of ugly. The trailer parts are easier for me to ignore than the legs. But overall, the look is very much a classic Optimus Prime. He is sturdy and has good articulation.
The cab/Orin Pax part is the chest and head.
The cab and trailer are not the greatest. The trailer is ok, except for the top of Primes chest at the front.
The cab is (do you sense a theme here?) ok from the front, but from any other angle is is horrible. The arms are just folded up in the back. They are not hidden or anything. They are just arms stuck to the back of a cab. But on to the good news…
A while back I wrote a top 10 list of Transformers I wanted Hasbro to make. Here is one from my list: Orin Pax. The head is great, the body is fine. Primes gun breaks in two to make Orin’s gun.
Just don’t turn him around.
Overall, I am happy with this Prime, probably because of this mode. Many Transformers have been updated copies of old toys. I am fine with this. But making new toys in new ways is also good. Sometimes. I am a little irritated with Prime as a part of a combiner. Anyway, I like the idea of having an Orin Pax that turns into Optimus Prime. The gimmick for Power of the Primes is little Power Masters and Power Cores. In this case, the Power Core is the central part of the Matrix of Leadership. It fits in the chest, but does not lock in place well and is difficult to place properly. This Prime has his flaws, but he is one of the best Prime toys we have had in years.
